Health Insurance for Ages 50–64 in Michigan: What to Expect in 2027
Quick answer: Health insurance costs more as you approach 65, and your options depend on income and health. Marketplace plans can charge older adults up to three times what they charge younger adults, and private plans are also priced by age.
Why costs rise
Premiums rise with age, and health needs tend to rise too. Under the ACA, plans can charge a 64-year-old up to about three times what a 21-year-old pays.
The 2027 subsidy picture
Without the enhanced credits, there is no credit above 400% of the poverty level, about $63,840 for one person and about $132,000 for a family of four. Older adults see the biggest swing because their full-price premiums are higher. Open enrollment for 2027 marketplace coverage began November 1, 2026. Most HealthCare.gov deadlines are December 15 for a January 1 start and January 15 for the final day, but state marketplaces set their own dates, so confirm yours on healthcare.gov.
Private plan option
If you are healthy, a private PPO on Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO may cost less than full-price marketplace coverage. It is underwritten, and health conditions that are common after 50 matter, so answer carefully.
Plan for Medicare
Your Medicare window opens three months before the month you turn 65. Coverage before that point has to come from the marketplace, a private plan, COBRA or an employer. Medicaid is expanded (Healthy Michigan Plan) in Michigan.
