Blue Cross vs. UnitedHealthcare in Michigan: Which Is Better for 2027?

By Martin Elefant · Licensed insurance agent · Updated November 2026 · 6 min read

Blue Cross Blue Shield and UnitedHealthcare are the two names people ask about most. Neither is "better" everywhere. They're built differently, and that difference tells you which one fits.

How they're structured

Blue Cross Blue Shield isn't one company. It's a federation of about 33 independent, locally run companies — the Blue plan in Michigan is its own company. Each Blue plan has deep relationships with local hospitals, and through the national BlueCard program, members can get in-network care from other Blue plans when they travel.

UnitedHealthcare is one national company, the largest health insurer in the U.S. by revenue, and part of UnitedHealth Group. Its strength is national scale, digital tools and broad employer networks.

Where they differ for individual buyers

The trap: same brand, different network

The Blue Cross or UnitedHealthcare plan you had through an employer is usually a broad PPO. The plan with the same logo on HealthCare.gov is often a narrow HMO or EPO built around one hospital system. Don't assume your doctors carry over. Check the exact plan name.

How to decide in Michigan

  1. See which of the two actually sells individual plans in your ZIP for 2027.
  2. Pull both plan directories and check your doctors and hospital.
  3. Compare drug tiers for your prescriptions.
  4. Compare total yearly cost: premium plus expected out-of-pocket.

If you need a true national PPO and neither offers one in your area, look at private options. Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st.

Is Blue Cross Blue Shield one company?
