Which Health Insurance Company Is Best in Michigan? How to Compare for 2027
There's no single best health insurance company. The same carrier can be great in one county and a poor fit in the next, because what you're really buying is a network and a plan design, not a logo. Here's how to compare companies the way an agent does.
1. Start with who actually sells in Michigan
Carriers choose which counties to sell in each year, and 2027 brought big changes. Several regional carriers also scaled back. Start by pulling the list of carriers available in your ZIP on HealthCare.gov, then add the private options available to you.
2. Compare networks, not brands
A Blue Cross plan on the marketplace may use a narrow network that's nothing like the Blue Cross network on an employer plan. Check which hospitals and doctors are included in the specific plan. See how to find in-network doctors.
3. Look at the plan design
Within one company, plans vary a lot: copays before the deductible or not, PPO or HMO, out-of-pocket maximums anywhere up to $12,000 for 2027. Compare plan to plan, not company to company.
4. Check service and complaints
- Complaint data. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes complaint indexes by company, and Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) handles complaints locally.
- Quality ratings. Marketplace plans carry star ratings on HealthCare.gov and many state exchanges.
- Real-world feedback. Ask your doctor's billing office which carriers are easy to work with. They know who pays on time.
5. Financial strength (for private plans)
For private underwritten plans, check that the underwriting insurance company holds a solid rating from AM Best or a similar agency. The marketing brand on the card isn't always the company carrying the risk.
Private plan options in Michigan
Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st.
So which is best?
The best company for you is the one that (1) includes your doctors, (2) covers your drugs at a reasonable tier, (3) has a plan whose total yearly cost fits your budget, and (4) pays claims without a fight. For a head-to-head on two of the biggest names, see Blue Cross vs. UnitedHealthcare.
Check your options and we'll compare every carrier available in your ZIP, marketplace and private.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best health insurance company?
It depends on where you live and which doctors you use. Compare the specific plan's network, drug coverage, total yearly cost and service record rather than the brand.
Is Cigna still selling ACA plans in 2027?
No. Cigna exited the individual ACA market in all 11 of its states for 2027. Cigna's PPO network is still leased by some private plans, which is a different arrangement.
How do I check complaints against a health insurer?
Use the NAIC's consumer complaint index or contact Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).
