Do I Need to Stay in My Job for Health Insurance in Michigan? (2027)

No. You don't need to stay in a job just for health insurance, but you do need a plan for the transition. Here's a timeline to follow before you give notice, whether you're starting a business, freelancing, or taking a break.

60 to 90 days before you leave

  • Estimate your income for the coverage year. Marketplace tax credits use expected income for the year you're covered, so a lower income after you leave can mean a bigger credit. The 2027 credit range is 100% to 400% of the poverty level ($15,960 to $63,840 for one; $33,000 to $132,000 for four).
  • List your doctors and prescriptions, and look up which plans cover them.
  • Time care you need. If you've met your deductible, schedule procedures before you go.

Know exactly when your coverage ends

Many employer plans run through the end of the month you leave; some end on your last day. Ask HR. That date starts your 60-day special enrollment window on HealthCare.gov.

Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st.

If you're starting a business

Once you're self-employed, your premiums are generally deductible. See self-employed health insurance deductions. If you hire employees later, small-business options open up, including ICHRAs. Michigan details

Michigan expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level (about $22,025 a year for one person) can generally qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid). Michigan has no state individual mandate, so there's no state tax penalty for going without coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Usually through COBRA, for up to 18 months, at the full premium plus up to 2%. Most people find a marketplace or private plan cheaper.

How long do I have to get health insurance after leaving a job?

60 days from losing job-based coverage to enroll in a marketplace plan through special enrollment.

Is health insurance cheaper if I start a business?

It can be. Lower first-year income can mean a bigger marketplace tax credit, and self-employed people can generally deduct premiums.
