Am I Stuck in My Job Because of Health Insurance? (Michigan 2027)
Probably less stuck than you think. "Job lock," staying in a job only for the insurance, made sense before 2014, when a pre-existing condition could make you uninsurable. Today you have guaranteed options. The real question is what they'll cost you, and you can figure that out before you give notice.
Step 1: Price what your coverage is really worth
Look at your pay stub for your share of the premium, then ask HR what the employer pays. KFF's 2026 survey found employers cover about $8,100 of a $9,804 single premium and about $20,800 of a $28,303 family premium on average. That's the value you need to replace.
Step 2: Know your guaranteed options
- Marketplace special enrollment. Leaving a job and losing its coverage gives you 60 days to enroll through HealthCare.gov, regardless of health. No one can turn you down or charge more for a condition.
- COBRA keeps your exact plan for up to 18 months at the full premium plus up to 2%. It's expensive, but useful if you're mid-treatment.
- A spouse's plan. Your job loss is a qualifying event to join it, usually within 30 days.
Step 3: Estimate your 2027 income honestly
Marketplace tax credits are based on your expected income for the year you're covered. If you're leaving for a startup, freelancing, or a lower-paying job, your 2027 income may qualify you for a large credit. Credits run from 100% to 400% of the poverty level ($15,960 to $63,840 for one person; $33,000 to $132,000 for four).
Step 4: If you're healthy, price private plans too
Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st.
When it might make sense to wait
- You're mid-treatment or pregnant, and switching networks would disrupt care.
- You've already met a large deductible this year. A new plan resets it to zero.
- Your expected income lands just above the 400% cliff, with no credit and a serious condition.
The Michigan details
In Michigan, open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs on HealthCare.gov from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Pick a plan by December 15, 2026 if you want coverage to start January 1, 2027; plans picked after that start later. Michigan expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level (about $22,025 a year for one person) can generally qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid).

Frequently asked questions
Can I get health insurance if I quit my job?
Yes. Losing job-based coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period on the marketplace, and you can't be turned down for health reasons.
Is COBRA worth it?
Usually only short-term, such as when you're mid-treatment or have met your deductible. It's often far more expensive than a subsidized marketplace plan.
What is job lock?
Staying in a job only to keep its health insurance. The ACA's guaranteed-issue marketplace made it much less necessary.
