How Much Does Health Insurance Cost Without an Employer in Michigan? (2027)
It depends far more on your income than on anything else, because the marketplace tax credit can cut the price from hundreds of dollars a month to almost nothing. Above the subsidy line it depends on age, location, and (for private plans) health.
How marketplace prices are set
ACA plans can only price on four things: age (a 64-year-old can be charged up to 3 times a 21-year-old), ZIP code, tobacco use, and family size. Health history doesn't count.
With a subsidy
For 2027 coverage, if your household income is between 100% and 400% of the poverty level, the premium tax credit caps what you pay for the benchmark silver plan at a share of your income, from about 2% at the low end to just over 10% near the top. Roughly:
| Household | Income range for a credit (2027 coverage) |
|---|---|
| 1 person | $15,960 – $63,840 |
| 2 people | $21,640 – $86,560 |
| 4 people | $33,000 – $132,000 |
Credits apply to any metal level, so pairing a credit with a bronze plan can bring the premium near $0 for some people.
Without a subsidy: the cliff
The extra subsidies that covered people above 400% expired at the end of 2025, and as of November 2026 Congress hasn't brought them back for 2027. So one dollar over the line can mean paying full price. KFF found the average marketplace enrollee's premium payment jumped 58% in 2026 when those subsidies ended. That's why so many self-employed people and early retirees are paying $1,000+ a month.
Private plans above the line
Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st. For healthy people over the cliff, these often cost meaningfully less than a full-price marketplace plan.
Michigan numbers
We break down real prices by age and plan type in how much health insurance costs in Michigan.
Ways to pay less
- Lower your MAGI with retirement and HSA contributions to get under the 400% line.
- Self-employed? Deduct your premiums. See the self-employed health insurance deduction.
- Pair a bronze plan with an HSA (up to $4,500 single / $9,000 family in 2027).
- Compare both markets every year. Prices and carriers change.

Frequently asked questions
How much is health insurance per month without a job?
It depends on income, age and location. With a subsidy it can be very low or $0; without one, individual marketplace plans commonly run several hundred to over $1,000 a month for older adults.
Is there still a subsidy cliff in 2027?
Yes, under current law as of November 2026. Premium tax credits stop at 400% of the poverty level ($63,840 for one person, $132,000 for a family of four).
Are private health plans cheaper than ACA plans?
For healthy people above the subsidy line they often are, because they price on health. For subsidy-eligible people or anyone with a serious condition, the marketplace is usually better.
