What Does Open Enrollment Mean? Michigan 2027 Dates and Deadlines
Open enrollment is the once-a-year window when anyone can sign up for, change, or drop an ACA health plan, with no qualifying life event needed. Outside it, the marketplace is mostly closed.
2027 dates in Michigan
In Michigan, open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs on HealthCare.gov from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Pick a plan by December 15, 2026 if you want coverage to start January 1, 2027; plans picked after that start later.
The deadline for 2027 has been in flux. A 2025 federal rule tried to shorten every state's window starting this year, a federal court threw that change out in 2026, and dates moved around as a result. Always confirm on HealthCare.gov, and treat the January 1 deadline as your real deadline.
What to do during open enrollment
- Update your income estimate for 2027, since your tax credit depends on it.
- Don't just auto-renew. Premiums, networks and carriers change every year.
- Check your doctors and drugs on the 2027 version of your plan.
- Compare total cost, not just premium. The 2027 out-of-pocket cap rises to $12,000.
- Pay your first premium on time. Coverage doesn't start until you do.
Employer open enrollment is different
Your job has its own open enrollment, usually in the fall. It's the only time (besides a life event) you can change employer plans or add family members.
If you miss it
- Special enrollment: 60 days after a qualifying life event such as losing coverage, marriage, a baby, or a move.
- the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid): open all year if you qualify.
- Private plans: underwritten plans in Michigan on Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO networks accept applications any month, with coverage starting the 1st.
Note that for 2027, the low-income special enrollment period that let people under 150% of the poverty level sign up any month is effectively gone: under the 2025 budget law, enrolling that way no longer comes with a tax credit.
Medicare is separate
Medicare's annual enrollment period runs October 15 to December 7. That's for people 65+ and different from the ACA window.
