What Is the ACA Marketplace in Michigan? (2027 Guide)
The ACA marketplace, also called the exchange or "Obamacare," is the government-run place to compare and buy individual health insurance and get income-based help paying for it. In Michigan it's HealthCare.gov.
What makes marketplace plans different
- Guaranteed issue. Everyone who's eligible is accepted, with no health questions and no pre-existing condition exclusions.
- Standard benefits. Every plan covers the 10 essential health benefits. See what health insurance covers.
- Income-based help. The marketplace is the only place to get premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions.
The metal tiers
| Tier | Plan pays (average) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | ~60% | Low premium, rare care; HSA-eligible since 2026 |
| Silver | ~70% | Anyone eligible for cost-sharing reductions (only on silver) |
| Gold | ~80% | Regular care, higher premium |
| Platinum | ~90% | Heavy care users (not offered everywhere) |
| Catastrophic | Very high deductible | Under 30, or 30+ with a hardship exemption |
Who gets help paying
For 2027, premium tax credits go to households between 100% and 400% of the poverty level ($15,960 to $63,840 for one; $33,000 to $132,000 for four) who don't have access to affordable employer coverage or Medicaid. The extra help that went above 400% expired after 2025, and as of November 2026 it hasn't been renewed. More on how it works: subsidy vs. tax credit.
When you can enroll
In Michigan, open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs on HealthCare.gov from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Pick a plan by December 15, 2026 if you want coverage to start January 1, 2027; plans picked after that start later. Outside that window you need a qualifying life event. See what open enrollment means.
What's new for 2027
- Out-of-pocket maximums rise to $12,000 (individual) and $24,000 (family).
- Tax credits for many lawfully present immigrants without green cards end. See coverage for non-citizens.
- If you got an advance credit and didn't file to reconcile it for one year, you can lose the credit.
- Carrier lineups changed in many counties, so compare before auto-renewing.
The marketplace vs. private plans
Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st. If you qualify for a subsidy or have a serious health condition, the marketplace is almost always the right answer. Comparison: private health insurance vs. ACA.
We're licensed agents and can enroll you in either. Check your options.
