What Happens If I Don't Pay My Health Insurance Premium in Michigan? (2027)

Missing a payment doesn't cancel your coverage immediately; there's a grace period. But if you don't catch up before it ends, you can lose coverage, owe for care you already received, and get locked out until the next open enrollment.

If you never paid the first premium

Coverage doesn't start until your first payment, called the binder payment, is made. Miss it and the enrollment is cancelled as if it never happened.

Marketplace plans with a tax credit: 3-month grace period

If you get an advance premium tax credit, you have a 3-month grace period once you've paid at least one month.

  • Month 1: your insurer pays claims normally.
  • Months 2 and 3: the insurer can hold ("pend") claims. Doctors may not get paid yet.
  • End of month 3: if you haven't paid all you owe, coverage ends retroactively to the last day of month 1. Claims from months 2 and 3 can be denied, and you may owe the providers.

Plans without a tax credit

For unsubsidized ACA plans and most private plans, the grace period is shorter and set by state law or the policy, often around a month — check your policy and Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) rules. After that, the policy can be terminated.

What it costs you

  • Lost coverage mid-year, with medical bills to settle yourself.
  • No easy way back: losing coverage for non-payment is not a qualifying life event, so you usually wait for open enrollment. In Michigan, open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs on HealthCare.gov from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Pick a plan by December 15, 2026 if you want coverage to start January 1, 2027; plans picked after that start later.
  • Tax-time consequences: you still reconcile any advance credit on your tax return.
  • Private plans may require you to re-qualify medically to get coverage again.

If you're having trouble paying

  1. Report an income drop to HealthCare.gov. A lower income can mean a larger tax credit and a smaller bill.
  2. Switch to autopay so a forgotten bill doesn't cost you your coverage.
  3. Check the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid) if your income has fallen. Michigan expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level (about $22,025 a year for one person) can generally qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid).
  4. Look at cheaper plans at the next enrollment window. See affordable options on a budget.

Check your options if your current premium no longer fits.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the grace period for health insurance?

Three months for marketplace enrollees who receive an advance premium tax credit and have paid at least one month. For other plans it's usually shorter, set by state law or the policy.

Can I re-enroll after my plan is cancelled for non-payment?

Usually not until the next open enrollment, because non-payment isn't a qualifying life event. You may still qualify for Medicaid or a private plan.

Will I owe for doctor visits during the grace period?

Possibly. Claims in months 2 and 3 of a subsidized grace period can be denied if you don't catch up, leaving you responsible for those bills.
