What's Included in Mental Health Coverage in Michigan? (2027)
Mental health care is an essential health benefit on every ACA plan, and federal parity law says it can't be covered more restrictively than physical health care. In practice, how much you pay comes down to networks and how your plan handles therapy visits.
What's typically covered
- Outpatient therapy and counseling (individual, family, group)
- Psychiatric evaluations and medication management
- Psychiatric medications, under the plan's drug formulary
- Inpatient and residential treatment
- Substance use disorder treatment, including detox and medication-assisted treatment
- Crisis and emergency care
- Telehealth therapy on many plans
What parity means
Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, if your plan covers mental health, copays, deductibles, visit limits and prior authorization rules for mental health can't be stricter than for comparable medical care. If your plan caps therapy at 20 visits but has no cap on physical therapy, ask why. That may be a parity violation.
Where people get stuck
- Networks. Many therapists don't take insurance at all. Check the directory and call before you book.
- The deductible. On some plans you pay the full therapy rate until the deductible is met. A plan with pre-deductible copays for office visits can save a lot if you go weekly.
- Out-of-network therapists. PPO plans may reimburse part of the cost if you submit a superbill. See how to file a claim.
Private and non-ACA plans
Outside the marketplace, private shared-network plans are sold in Michigan on leased PPO networks (Cigna, Aetna and PHCS PPO). They're medically underwritten, so they ask health questions and price on age and health instead of income, but you can enroll any month and coverage starts on the 1st. Non-ACA plans don't have to cover all essential health benefits, and some limit or exclude mental health care or treat a past diagnosis as pre-existing. Read the mental health section of the plan document before you buy.
Lower-cost options
- Michigan expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level (about $22,025 a year for one person) can generally qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid).
- Community mental health centers often charge on a sliding scale.
- Employee assistance programs (EAPs) usually offer a few free sessions.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
In Michigan, open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs on HealthCare.gov from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Pick a plan by December 15, 2026 if you want coverage to start January 1, 2027; plans picked after that start later. Check your options and tell us how often you see a therapist; we'll find plans that cover it well.
